New to Toronto? On a Toronto work assignment and want to see the sights? Visiting Toronto and the GTA? The Greater Toronto Area has some spectacular things to see and do. In our “Visit” series, we will focus on some of the great day-trips to take to get to know your new hometown.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a picturesque town located on the Niagara Peninsula, a short drive from Niagara Falls. Home to the Shaw Festival, Fort George, and a plethora of wineries, this quaint little town offers BIG fun. In 2018, Booking.com even ranked Niagara-on-the-Lake one of the most welcoming places on earth. What an honour! So when visiting Toronto, consider a wine-tasting tour of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Historically, Niagara-on-the-Lake is quite significant. Prior to officially becoming Ontario, this province was actually Upper Canada, and Niagara-on-the-lake was its first capital. During the War of 1812, Fort George was the site of many battles. Moreover some of the oldest Anglican and Catholic churches in Ontario also reside in the area.
Visitors to the area can take in a theatrical performance (or two or three) during the Shaw Festival, which runs from April to November, and features words from George Bernard Shaw. Want dinner and show? There are over 25 restaurants within walking distance of the Shaw Festival theatres, in various price ranges, and offering any type of cuisine you can think of.
Consider yourself to be a wine aficionado? Then Niagara-on-the-Lake should be top of your list of places to visit, as the region is world-famous for wine production. World-renowned wineries such as Peller Estates, Magnotta Winery, Inniskillin, Trius, and Jackson-Triggs (to name just a few) operate in the area, and provide tours and tastings. Even “The Great One” Wayne Gretsky has a winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake! If you are planning a visit to the area in January or February, then enjoy the area’s fabulous icewine… a cherished product in Canada.
