Downsizing happens for many reasons. Empty-nesters could be wanting to travel more and not worry so much about a large home. Recent retirees may be looking to spend more time at their cottage, and only want to manage a condo in Toronto as a secondary home. Perhaps a new job means that only part of the year will be spent in Toronto, so a smaller residence would be a better option. No matter the reason, downsizing can be an exciting opportunity.

Many people chose to start fresh in their smaller digs with all new furniture. This could be due to older furniture being just that… older. It could also be that your previous furniture just simply won’t fit the space. There is also the young adult children that you donate the furniture to. Just remember to focus on how you want your new place to look and flow.

Storage
When trying to decide which pieces to keep, consider storage potential. If you are downsizing into a condo, multi-purpose pieces with storage potential are key. Likewise, remember that what you take with you will need to be stored! So if you feel you won’t use that large set of crystal, pass it on to your children. Start this process early, as it will help with staging your home for sale.
