Leaside is a community just north of downtown Toronto. It is bordered by Bayview Ave to the west, the railway line to the south, Leslie St to the east, and Sunnybrook Park to the north. The name Leaside comes from the Lea family, whom settled in the area in the early 19th century, with William Lea building an octagonal shaped home, which he affectionately named “Leaside”.
The area as we know it today was created by the Canadian Northern Railway, whom purchased the area to build upper-class homes around the railway maintenance yard. Many street names, in fact, were after railway executives, such as Laird Dr, Hanna Rd, and Wicksteed Ave. Leaside has some beautiful parks, and the incredible Ontario Science Centre. Commute time to the financial district of downtown is 38 minutes by subway, or 35 minutes by car.
Real Estate in the area still offers homebuyers some fantastic options. As of May 2018, there were 71 new listings, selling for 100.9% of asking price, within 15 days, and with an average selling price of $1,017,565. Ten years ago the average selling price was $517,563, so real estate in the area proves to be an excellent investment with properties almost doubling in value in 10 years. One bedroom rentals rent for, on average, $1,800 per month, though they are rare given the area is mostly single family homes.
