Corktown is a small neighbourhood in Toronto just south of Queen Street down to Eastern Ave, between Parliament St and River St. The area had a large Irish influence in the early part of the 1800’s, mainly from Cork, Ireland… thus the name. Though others may argue the name came about as a result of the many distilleries, breweries, and cork-stopper manufacturers in the area in the early 19th century.
The area as we know it today, was a result of a massive road construction project in the 60’s, which saw an incredible number of homes and buildings demolished to make way for elevated roadways. These include the Richmond St off-ramp from the DVP and the Eastern Ave overpass. Although these roadways are critical to automobile users in 2018, their construction was not without controversy in the 1960’s, as the House of Providence was destroyed in the process… an institution which housed orphans and poor elderly individuals.
Modern day Corktown has parks, coffee shops, yoga studios, and the truly zen-enducing Body Blitz Spa. The area is a short walk/run/bike from the Distillery District and their famous Christmas Market. Commute time to the financial district of downtown is 7-16 minutes by streetcar, or 20 minutes walking.
Real Estate in the area still offers homebuyers some great options. As of May 2018, there were 374 new listings, selling for 102.4% of asking price, within 12 days, and with an average selling price of $739,916 (close to the average selling price of condominium units in found in Liberty Village). Some excellent deals to be found, in an up-and-coming neighbourhood. One bedroom rentals rent for, on average, $2,025 per month.
