RELOCATING TO TORONTO: Helpful Relocation Tips for Summer

No matter the circumstances, moving to a new house or apartment can be overwhelming and stressful. But with proper planning and preparation, you can help make moving to Toronto this summer just a little bit easier for yourself and your family. Summer is the ideal time of year to plan and execute your move for a number of reasons. The warm temperatures make transporting all of your precious possessions a lot easier and you don’t have to worry about rough road conditions.

Summer is also peak property selling and renting season, so if you’re considering relocating to Toronto any time soon, then you should follow these summer relocation tips.

Create a Moving Itinerary

Organization and proper time management is the key to executing a successful move with minimal problems. To help you get started with the planning, take some time to make a list of all of your possessions and categorize them based on what you’re taking with you and what you’re planning on selling or donating. The rule of thumb is that if it hasn’t been used in at least a year, then it needs to go.

You should also create a detailed moving timeline that includes all of the tasks you want to complete before and on moving day. This will ensure that nothing gets left behind or undone and you can keep modifying the list as you go along.

Wear Weather Appropriate Clothing

Contrary to what a lot of people believe, summers in Toronto can get very hot—sometimes uncomfortably so. And sometimes the weather can be a little unpredictable with random scattered showers throughout the day. Check the weather forecast in advance and make sure to wear appropriate clothing for move-in day.

On hot days, it’s recommended that you wear light, breathable fabrics that are easy to move in so that you can utilize your full range of motion. You’re going to be extremely busy and the last thing you want to worry about is not being able to move freely due to tight clothing.

Drink Plenty of Water

Moving into a new home can keep you extremely busy. Before you know it, the day will be half over before you even get a chance to take a sip of water. Staying hydrated is extremely important, though, to prevent lightheadedness, replenish the fluids that you sweat out, and keep your energy levels up throughout the day. On that note, it’s your responsibility to provide your moving crew with sufficient cold bottled water throughout the day, so that they can continue working efficiently.

Apply Sunscreen throughout the Day

On move-in day, you’re going to be spending a lot of time going in and out of your new abode unloading boxes and directing the movers. That means you’re also going to be exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun a lot. To protect yourself and your kids from getting sunburnt, make sure to apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day or as directed on the bottle. Choose a water and sweat resistant sunscreen that’s at least 30 SPF or higher and keep in mind that even on overcast days, you still need to protect your skin.

Rent a Short-Term Apartment in Toronto During Your Moving Period

Among other factors, one of the most important things you have to worry about when moving into a new place is where you’re going to stay during your moving period. Depending on your circumstances—whether you’re selling your current home or your lease on your rental apartment is ending—you might need a temporary place to stay. While it’s nice of your friends and family to offer you an extra couch to sleep on during this time, you’ll most likely want to have a place of your own.

If you are more inclined to have your space, then short-term furnished apartments in Toronto are an excellent alternative option and they’re super affordable. You’ll have the convenience of living in the city during your move without having to compromise on privacy, security, or amenities. Best of all, you won’t feel like you’re infringing on anyone else’s space!  

Supply Portable Fans while Relocating to Toronto

If you’re uncertain whether the previous inhabitants of your new abode will leave the AC on for you, then you might want to be prepared by bringing a few portable fans along. You can find affordable options at a number of major retailers and if you don’t have electricity at the new place, you can even get battery-operated fans. It might not seem like a top priority right now, but you’ll be glad you followed this advice when combating the scorching heat on move-in day.

Take Frequent Breaks

Loading, lifting, and unloading heavy boxes and large pieces of furniture all day is exhausting work and it’s even worse when you’re doing it in the heat. While it’s understandable that you and your moving crew want to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible, you need to take a few breaks throughout the day. It’s actually proven that taking a breather at least once every hour can help boost efficiency and stamina and it reminds you to stay hydrated and eat throughout the day.

Recognize the Signs of Overheating

Before move-in day approaches, educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of overheating, so that you know what to do in the event that it happens to you or someone else. A few of the symptoms of overheating include:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Disorientation
  • Muscle cramps
  • Seizures
  • Fainting

If you or a member of your moving crew experiences any of these symptoms, then you need to get yourself or them into a cool air conditioned area immediately. Drink lots of water and lie down somewhere until you feel recuperated to avoid fainting and injuring yourself or someone else. If possible, see if you can take a cold shower to lower your body temperature.
